Is My Relationship Worth Saving?

You step on the scale on a Tuesday and you’re up two pounds.

You spend the whole drive to work deciding you’ve ruined everything. Nothing fits. This is who you are now.

Thursday you’re down three, and you feel like a completely different person.

Nothing about your body meaningfully changed in forty-eight hours. You took two readings off an instrument that moves all day long, and you treated each one as a verdict.

Now do that with your marriage.

The evidence changes every single day

One night you’re done. You’ve had the entire conversation in your head, you know exactly how you’d start it, and you are finished.

By the following evening you’re not finished at all. Something was easier. They were kind about something small. And you think, maybe I’m making more of this than it is.

So you wait. And then it’s bad again, and then it isn’t, and this goes on.

Here’s what I want you to hear, because people are hard on themselves about this. You are not weak and you are not indecisive. You are trying to make the biggest decision of your life using evidence that changes every twenty-four hours.

One good day resets the clock on a hundred bad ones. That’s not a character flaw. That’s what happens when you use your feelings as your only instrument.

And couples don’t spend a week here. They spend years. Some of them spend a lifetime. I’ve been there myself, and I don’t have a gentler word for it than miserable.

A relationship worth saving usually still feels terrible

This is the part that surprises people most, and Brooke says it better than I do in this episode.

If your relationship is worth fighting for, it will probably still feel awful right now. You’ll still feel misunderstood. You’ll still feel like none of your needs are being met. You will probably still be fighting.

We are not saying a relationship is only worth saving if it’s already a pretty good one. Almost nobody arrives at that question from a pretty good one.

So if you’ve been listening to yourself think my marriage can’t be worth saving, it’s genuinely terrible right now, I want to take that particular piece of evidence off the table. How it feels today is not the thing that tells you.

Then what does tell you?

Something quieter, and you already have access to it.

You can lie with your words. You cannot lie with your demonstration.

So stop reading the feelings for a minute and read the behavior instead. Is your partner still doing their part, even badly, even while hurt? Still getting the kids where they need to go. Still handling their side of the money. Still making your coffee because that’s just what they’ve always done.

Nobody’s run off. Nobody’s bottomed out. Nobody has fully checked out. It’s painful and awkward and the conversations have dried up, and you are both still here, still doing the things, still keeping the agreements you made.

That’s not nothing. That is somebody who has not left the table.

People discount this constantly because it isn’t romantic and it doesn’t feel like love. It’s the single most useful signal in the whole picture, and it’s the one nobody’s looking at, because everyone is busy checking the scale again.

There are several more signs like this one, and I go through all of them in the episode.

What we get into

  • Three couples who were stuck exactly here. One of them had already been told her marriage was over and had filed the papers. She’s still married today, and what she found out changed how she understood the entire situation.
  • The fears that keep people stuck for years. Will this actually work for me? Is it too late? Can I ever really get over what happened? I take all three of them head on.
  • What it means when someone is doing a lot for you but not showing up emotionally, and why that’s so easy to misread in both directions.
  • The difference between a relationship that’s breaking down and one that’s breaking through, and why you can’t answer the stay-or-go question until you know which one you’re in.
  • And three questions at the end. If you can both answer yes, you’re looking at a relationship worth fighting for. I’d listen for those specifically. Most people remember the stories and miss the framework, and the framework is the part you can use tonight.

This is the last of the episodes we brought back while we were away. We’re home from Tuscany, and brand new episodes start again next week.
